Capsicum plaster, also known as capsicum cream or chili cream, is a topical ointment made from hot peppers. It offers warming sensation to the skin and can relieve some painful symptoms including:
01. Muscle Soreness
Capsaicin, the active compound in hot peppers, triggers mild heat on the skin which helps relax muscles and ease muscle soreness caused by strains or over-use. Applying capsicum plaster on areas with muscle tightness can provide soothing relief.
02. Joint Pain
The warming effect of capsicum plaster may also alleviate pain linked to conditions like arthritis in the joints. Placing the plasters on painful joints can temporarily relieve joint discomfort.
03. Sports Injuries
Using capsicum plaster on localized sports injuries like sprains and muscle pulls can facilitate recovery. The increased blood flow to the affected area can reduce swelling and stiffness. Always combine with other treatments for the best results.
04. Neuropathic Pain
Capsaicin inhibits the release of substance P, a pain messenger, and desensitizes pain nerve fibers. This can diminish neuropathic pain such as nerve damage pain or sciatica. Regular low-dose application for a period of time is required.
05. Migraines
Some studies suggest that capsicum plaster may have a place in alleviating migraine attacks when applied to the forehead and back of the neck. More evidence is still needed on its effectiveness for migraines.
06. Cold and Flu
The mild irritation caused by capsicum plaster clears up nasal congestion associated with colds and flu. It can also relieve headaches and fever symptoms. Do not use on open wounds or irritated skin.
While capsicum plaster can complement treatment plans for painful conditions, it should not replace medical treatment. Use cautiously as it can cause skin irritation and allergies in some people. Seek advice if unsure.
